Shift liknage/shiftter question.

I'm installing my LQ4/4L80E transmission into my 87 Suburban.
after I got the shift linkage connected, I had the idea to make sure I could shift through the gears afterward. I put the key in and turned the key to unlock the steering, and I can only shift from park into reverse. Do I need to have power hooked up to my harness/transmission to shift into the other gears, or did I do something wrong?
Seems like I could move the shifter tab through all the gears before I hooked it up but I could be wrong.
