I had to drop the pan after I put the engine back in because I used the wrong pan seal. I was able to do it easily though. My truck is a 63, so I'm not sure if there is much difference between the cross members.
I did not remove the starter. All I had to do was drop the exhaust and rotate the engine to where the counterweight of the crank was up in the block at the front of the engine
