Do shop techs use the shop-owned computers or at least self-owned computers dedicated to their work? If you have an old machine you can put in your garage, well and fine. But my personal computer--the one I not only use for things like this board but also my real jobs--is something I can't risk out in the heat, grease, dirt and wet, even if I had a keyboard cover. So the books go out to the garage/tractor shed/shadetree.
And I have found no substitute for the factory manuals. Yes, there are useful Youtube vids that show someone else doing it, but many of them are worse that useless: I have seen ones that are not only dangerous to the vehicles but also to me.
