The 396/427 chevy motors are internally balanced like the small blocks (excluding 400 and 383) so the flexplates are pretty much interchangable.

No, I am not sure about the compression rating but the late model BB (7.4 and 8.1L BB….actually the same starter as the 1996 and newer L31 5.7L 350’s) starters will spin over an older BB without any problems. The newer engines do not have high compression like the old days but they do have some major accessory to turn with as well such as the A/C compressor, p/s pump, heavy clutch fans, etc. The late model starters spin quickly and sounds nice doing it. Much more reliable than the old heavy run of the mill starter.

350’s, 396’s, and other internally balanced Chevy engines also use 168 teeth flywheel so either way, you shouldn’t have a problem using an off the self late model GM starter.

You will have to add something to fill the gap in the dust cover though. The picture I posted was right after I installed the engine….before the starter wiring harness was loomed, closed the temporary O2 sensor port and filled the starter gap with a cut heater hose.
