Wood trim decals?

I was reading in one of my parts catalogues, and they sell woodgrain decal kits for the lower trim. I have the lower woodgrain on my highlander LWB now, but it is all bent up and not reuseable. I don't mind the look of the trim, but I don't like how it collects road grime and corrodes the metal behind it. I was wondering if it would be possible, or even worth it, to take a woodgrain decal set for the trim and install it directly onto my truck after I paint it, without the trim to stick it to, just stick the pieces onto the paint, and maybe trim them with a chrome pinstripe. Anyone ever done this, or have any idea whether or not it would even work?
