82k5 4x4 Rear main replacement

Forgive the N00biness.
I have an 82K5 that absolutely SPEWS oil.
I have never replaced a rear main in a domestic.
AM I going to have to pull the motor? or the Tranny?(based on Ease.)
I've also heard all I have to do is drop the pan.
I'm prepared to do whatever...(except pay 760.00 to have someone else to do it.)
Thanks for the responses.
