I have a few times. It is the easiest way to cure a worn out column shifter.

Hurst makes several different shifters that will work. I like the Mastershift that Hurst makes, it runs around $200. You need a shifter with a handle around 16" tall that is curved to clear a bench seat, so that leaves a lot of shifters out. You will probably get some noise from the shifter linkage as it vibrates while driving and will have adapt a switch to the shifter for backup lights.
