Why cant I........

Hey guys,
Hope someone can helpme.I have several trucks from 58'-97'.Here is what is confusing me.I have seen everyone swap complete x-members from the 73-87 trucks into 60-72 trucks. How come you cant just swap arms. The project that I'm getting ready to start on is a 65'1 ton flat bed work truck,I want to swap to disc brakes.I have a complete x-member from an 87' 1 ton truck, why cant i just swap the arms and spindles.Do i have to bolt in the complete cross member from the 87'?I will also be adding the 87'power steering and hydro boost.I'll try and post pics when I start.I just dont want to do more than I have to.Thanks for any help you can give.
