boxing in control arms?

Well, the frame gets down here saturday morning, and im ready to get rippin on it. I will be narrowing my control arms 1" per side, and was wondering, has anyone ever boxed them in? Like takin a piece of 1/4" steel and welded it to the bottom? yet leaving the ball joint accessable. I was thinking of doing this, for added strength, and cleaning it up a bit, while still not spending a million dollars on aftermarket control arms. i was going to step them too, but i think with a 4"Z and 3" spindles, im low enough for cruising. Oh, about the strength, i notched my driver upper control arm, for my steering shaft, another reason why i want to add strength.
