Stereo Amp help

My son & I are finally about finished with his truck(pics will follow)
Well today when we were putting the stereo back in we hooked up the amp & subs & nothing! We have power going into the amp but no sound comes out of the subs. Now I will be the first to admit that I don't know squat about stereos.
Should I have power at the speakers(checking with a test light?) I don't have any. It worked fine a year & a half ago when we tore it apart to paint. The stereo works fine when playing through the 6x9's & dash speaker. It's a 1000 watt Alpine amp. Ground is good(we used it to test power coming in) I'm just trying to throw all info I can out here.Any ideas?
