Here's a link to a wiring diagram from a 60 Chevy car. Basic wiring should be the same for a pickup.

It shows the wire from the fuse block to the panel lights as grey. This would be the wire to tap into. If there is a place on your fuseblock labeled panel lights, it's the ideal place, but I can't recall if there is. You do not want to tap into the wiring from the headlight switch, it is not fuse protected.
