? for 4wd experts

I am putting together a 72 1/2 ton 4wd. Getting ready to work on the front end. There were 2 designs of the spindles. Mine have the 1st design, I am wanting to replace them. Cannot locate any first design spindles. I have located some NOS 2nd design spindles. The question is can I switch to the 2nd design as long as I use the bearings and all to match or are the actual axles different also. As near as I can tell the only difference is the outer diameter of the spindle. Just thought Someone out there might know for sure. Thanks, Bill
