I can't add much to what was said before except it's a part of growing up.The only thing that really surprises me is that a 17 year old in this day and age has the cahoneys to own up to a mistake and suffer the consequences without much complaint.
Stay the course of their punishment and do a few extra unrequired chores to show them you understand and to help let them know you do want to re-earn their trust.
