Firewall grommet/connector

What is the proper procedure for taking out the firewall grommet? The main one where the blinker light plug is the top half and the other main portion is the bottom half. The inside and outside portion appears to be some rubber material that has I am sure hardened up but what about the inside plug portion? I want to take it out so I can clean it up and reuse it. This is on a '64 C10. Thanks!!
