power wire to coil

Hi, on my 65, where the harness for the engine comes out ofthe firewall, there is a plug. on the engine side of that plug the wire that goes to the (+) coil, is a solid wire with insulation. I'm told thejobof this wire is to bring the power to the coil down to 9volts. Other then the wire, is there another way to do that?

reason im asking, is i left my truck running outside to warm up, and it stalled. When i got back out to it a couple minutes later, there was a burning smell, opened the hood and the wire was red hot.

any suggestions?
