Alternator Question
I know I've seen this on this board before but never had the need to know until now. What's involved in changing the old type alternator with the ext. mechanical regulator to the new type with the internal reg? My son's truck sat through the winter with the battery unhooked and we had to jump it to get it started. Turns out the battery had an internal short in it (probably from sitting for 6 mo.) so he got a new battery, drove it to work and by noon it was dead again. There is a drain on the battery (we checked it with a test light between the neg. cable and battery post). Pulled the wires off the alt. and it still shows a small drain. He's taking the alt. this afternoon to get it checked and if it checks good it's almost got to be the ext. regulator. It was fine last fall when he parked it in his Grandma's garage. A couple of years ago I saw a post that had pictures of what had to be jumpered on the old reg. connector so you could use the newer type alternator w/internal regulator. Any help would be appreciated.
