fleetside inner bed panels

i have a '66 short/fleet...the inner bed panels are in nice condition except for the flange at the bottom that bolts to the bed wood...i know you can buy replacement inner bed panels, but i hate to go through that trouble when only that flange needs replacing...so i was wondering if it would be possible to just cut off the flange & weld (or bolt) up something similar to what the stepside bed has?

i'm posting a couple reference pics of the "L" shaped metal flange on the stepside bed

thanks for any input
