BB starter Heat Shield questions

I am getting things hooked up to start up my 402 BB motor. I have read on here in the search forum that I may have problems with ruining my starter unless I install a heat shield.

Are the heat shields only to cover the solenoid or the whole starter?
Do you have to take off the starter to bolt up the heat shield ?

Can you buy this heat shield from the local parts stores?

If any of you have made your own shield ,,could you give me your Ideas and what metal and thickness you used to do so.. and how you fastened it ?
