shock question

I just installed a set of front coil spring that I cut 1 coil off of. Which I hear causes the truck to be about 2 inches lower. So my question is how much shorter do my shocks need to be? Should I use the stock height shock or a shock that is 2 inches shorter. I was told that the shock should be long enough to allow the lower a ams to hang as low as they can while the truck is on jack stands and the wheels are freely hanging. Which is what the stock length shock allows me to do. But the same person that told me that, told me to use a shock that is 1-2 inches shorter than stock. My worry is that I will bottom out on the stock shocks. I have a set of stock height shock and a set that is around 2 inches shorter from a 62 chevy that had also been lowered 2 inches.
