I do not think it will cover with caulk . If you trim the old piece from the inside of your old quarter panel you can probably use it to patch the inside of the new panel. You could trim the new panel a bit and either tack weld the old piece in or bolt the old piece in place and caulk it then . We are only talking about a small 1/2 to 1 inch gap here . Not really that much of a difference.
