question on ece 4.5/6 drop install

Just got a quick question, working on installing my ece 4.5/6 drop kit on my 69 gmc on this beautiful rainy Sunday. Im kind off following the project blank slate build thread from 72BlckButy as i guide. My question has to do with the trimming of the bump stops as seen in his picture here.

He left part of the lip there and that part of my lip has a crack and is kind of crunched down as if it was bottomed out really hard once or a couple dozen times. Is there a purpose to leave that lip of can i just grind the whole thing off?
