steering column swap

Ok having a problem with the steering coulmn I swapped in. Was originally a 3 on the tree. Got a auto column from a friend and put it in. Having a problem getting the linkage to sync up with the selector. I tried to get some stock linkage to work but couldn't. I bought a universal linkage fro Summit (LOKAR) that's adjustable, but can't get it to sync up either. Then the lower bearing retainer starting coming out of the bottom of the column. Any ideas to get the linkage to work, or am I doomed to put in a floor shifter, which I am not against, just wanted a column shift.
