Bed Strips

I am think about making my own bed strips from Hickory. Has anyone done this? If you have could you supply me with some information such as the width of the boards and the width of the routed or dadoed groove. Also how far from the edge do you cut it? What is the width of the gap between each board? I can get some of this information once I order the SS connecting strips. Do you also have to route the edges of the board to round them off? Any other cuts that need to be routed? Thanks for your help. My plans are to go to my local building supply and have them route the boards. That way if they screw one up it is on them. I also plan on using linseed oil.
