Keep it real. Once you remove the crossmember holding the carrier bearing there is nothing else in the way because the drive shaft takes the same path. If you are using a V-8 the additional hp is hard on a carrier bearing. With a 1 piece drive shaft you have 2 u-joints operating at longer angle which is easier on u-joints.
