AM/FM tuning number face(s)

Anyone ever yanked apart the front face of an AM/FM to try to fix the station number paper (or whatever it is) roll?

Just curious, not real enthused about diggin into this thing - looks real nice, but may need some mech work to be able to smoothly switch between am and fm. Works great switching to FM, but when switching to am, it kinda makes a weird "crinkly" noise and the roll doesn't rotate all the way - i.e. left side of the am tuning dial clearly visible, but right side lags behind a bit (probably the crinlky noise... one side seems to be rotating further than the other).

Appreciate any insight anyone may have - might be an easy fix, but it might not be worth trying to fix if there's a good chance I'll screw it up further. Will probably work as is, but I cringe when switching to AM...

Thanks.
