83 1/2 ton 6 cylinder, 10 bolt rear end...bearing shot?

I picked up this 1983 1/2 ton step shorty with 120,000 miles on it last week for my son.
It's leaking gear oil quite bad on the left rear drum around the axel (soaked the brakes). Will a seal do it or should I just go ahead and change the bearing and all. Maybe even do both sides? Is it a tough job? Special tools?
Thanks

~wish I could post picks right off my iPhone~
