Manual transmission options

Hey guys I'm sure this has been covered multiple times but from what I've searched on google I can't get the answer I'm looking for so was hoping some guru could quickly chime in here

I have a 70 swb step I'm doing a full resto on and replacing my 350sb and 4 speed stump puller

I have a complete lq4 down to the belts and wanted to go T56 and keep a manual transmission but Jesus they seem to be few an far between and cost an arm an a leg. Automatic isn't Somthing I really wanna do don't ask me why but it would really be a last resort to go 4l60e

Is there a 5 speed equivalent that's more common and cheaper? Somthing that would be a fairly easy junk yard find until a t56 is in the budget?

I know the trucks came in 5 speed but do they shift like a truck? I'd like to have Somthing that I could speed shift that wouldn't be like my stump puller which kind of feels like I'm driving an old school bus!

Thanks for any input guys , my rear end is a 3:73 if that helps any
