starting problem please help this is a daily driver

starting pronlem please help this is a daily driver was off....so I advanced it and wala,it ran great....then my starter just started dragging real bad and making cluncking noises and then sometimes won't start after it warms up and I try to restart it...any ideas? Oh yea If I retard the timing the starter thing isn't as bad but then the truck runs like crap......it's a 1991454 motor in a 78 2wd with a turbo 400
