Problem in column, neutral safety switch?

Well I kept wondering about this, and since my steering column has about maybe 1/2" to 3/4" of play in it, I decided to try something. I wondered if when I parked my truck the other day when it would not start, since there is play in the lowerrt f the column, maybe if it's all the way to the left or all the way to the right, maybe that's making a wire or something not have enough contact or something and that's why it wont start sometimes. Thought maybe when I put it in park I pushed hard on it to where it was all the way to the left. So I went outside and got in truck and with my hands turned the column all the way to the right towards the right front tire which like I said is about 1/2 to 3/4 on an inch, and the truck fired right up. Then I turned it all the way to the left towards the drivers side tire and turned the key and nothing at all! I did this like 5 times and every time I had the column towards the left all the way it would not start, only the key turned and nothing at all. So what wire could be causing this in there?
