shortening steering column

I have been searching since Thursday on how to shorten my column. I got everything loose and began to move it toward the dash. it might have gone an inch then nothing else. making sure I did the steps that were needing I crawled back under the dash and noticed that my neutral safety switch is hitting the firewall. I'm sure that someone on the forum has moved the nss into the engine compartment without having to modify the column at all. what did you guys do to shorten yours??
