Question 235 cruising and max rev speed

I have drived the truck on last sunday for the first time. I have installed a tachometer and have noticed that the engine is not so happy to go above 2200rpm which give around 30mph. Followers were not so pleased...
I think that I will need to work a little bit with ignition timing. I am wondering what is best engine running speed 2000, 2500, 3000? and max rpm this engine can support safely?
Engine is stock 235
Thank you for your help.
Michel from France
