Dipstick shenanigans...

Bear with me a second, there's a question coming...

So, today I put new finned pushrod covers on my '74 250-6.

The dipstick tube was intended to be mounted on the center-bolt of the rear pushrod cover, though due to the fins, the bracket doesn't work.

I ground it off, took some measurements, and welded it back on in a better location.

Unfortunately, the last thing I welded was a bumper-mount, and I neglected to reset my Lincoln buzz-box...

Naturally, I blasted holes through the flimsy tuning, and then uttered some bad swears when I realized it was done for.

At the junkyard, I found a 292 dipstick and tube. The tube is longer, and the dipstick itself has roughly 1 1/2" more reveal then my stock dipstick--meaning it sicks out of the business end that much farther.

So here's the question: Do I shorten the 292 tube to match my stock 250 tube and then use my stock 250 dipstick, or do I measure the reveal on my stock dipstick, shorten the 292 dipstick to same reveal, and make new marks?

Or, does somebody have a line on a nice, aftermarket Chevy 250 rear-sump dipstick and tube?

Thanks, and any advice is appreciated, as are dipstick-jokes...
