Steering Wheel Clean Up

I got a steering wheel for my Suburban. It is a ’73 + wheel. It is in nice shape, and looks good. However, it is kind of “sticky”. I gave it a quick soap and water clean up, but that does not seem to help. Is there a better method I can use, or is the material of the wheel itself actually “breaking down”? Thanks, Joe Bob.
