Installed a vacuum pump for brakes

My 350/290hp crate engine has very little vacuum to run the brakes, I've tried a lot get to get more vacuum out of it to no avail, I even installed a new brake booster with no luck so I installed a vacuum pump and what a difference. I can actually lock up the tires if I want. Trying to keep the plumbing simple I left the original vac line unconnected, without the vac pump I barely had brakes with it connected so I just plugged it for now. I'm curious how much faith I should put into the vacuum pump, I read a lot about the pump I bought and it seems pretty reliable but I'd hate to have it fail and leave me without brakes. I have a vacuum canister so I will get a few pumps out of reserve vacuum but should I be concerned running only a vacuum pump? Being that the limited vacuum I got from the engine made little difference I don't see it making much difference. Have any of you gone with only a vacuum pump for your brakes? Ever had any issues? I bought a GM pump and it works fast, I can stomp on the brakes over and over and it never runs out of vacuum. I installed an adjustable vacuum switch as well that shuts off the pump as soon as the desired vac is attained so it doesn't run constantly.
