VSS wiring

Hey guys Im working on wiring up my nv3500's speed sensor, which is a 2 pin sensor, pretty sure they're magnetic. From my understanding 1 pin is ground and the other pin is the signal? Or is 1 pin Low reference and the 2nd pin signal?

I'm just not sure If I need to use Pin 20 on the Red connector (c2 99-02 engines) which is the reference Low for a VSS. Then pin 21 would be the actual signal from the speed sensor. OR Do I just ground 1 pin on the sensor and just run my signal wire. Also does orientation matter or can I have the wires go to either pin on the sensor?
