How to rebuild a set of wipers

After starting this thread, where I was looking for refills for my nice old stainless Anco wipers, I decided to get to work.

Went to a couple of parts stores, and neither one could get me refills. No surprise. So, it was time to get creative. Picked out a set of Trico Exact Fit 13" replacements. They would be great if they weren't black. We're not going to worry about that, though.

We only need the rubber from the new wipers. On the end of the wiper where the lock is, pry that tab up a little. This will let you slide out the rubber with the stainless insert.

Take the stainless pieces off the rubber. I had tried to reuse this on my old wipers, but they were too narrow.

Take your old wiper, and disassemble it.

Cut the rubber out of the old stainless keeper.

Cut a small piece off the new rubber to fit the old stainless keeper (measure first).

Start to work the new rubber into the old keeper.

It will be easy, until the end. Use a blunt screwdriver to get that last bit to seat.

Slide one of the arms on to the detent. You can see the masking tape piece I used to make sure the rubber stayed in place while I reassembled.

Make sure the pieces go back in the correct place. Red refill buttons on the outside.

Crimp the little tabs down a bit to make sure things don't move around. I made sure that I crimped both rubber and stainless.

Time to replace the wiper beam.

Done. Bring on the rain.
