I would say having the pan above the crossmember is a good idea, but nothing in life is guaranteed. Just for sh!ts and grins, this is an F body pan I took off my Nova. It sits above the crossmember by 3/4" or so. I hit a rock in the middle of the road in mid town Kansas City, notsome back road in the middle of nowhere. Crossmember hit the rock and the car rolled over it and when it cleared, it came down right on the pan.
