Turns over but no spark

I have a 454 in a 1972 Chevy Cheyenne. Put a new starter in and distributor coil. (It's a hei distributor) I put the new coil in cause the truck would turn over but wouldn't start. After the coil same problem but realized it was because the battery wire from the distributor came off so I ran it directly to the battery and the truck ran great. But it obviously wouldn't shut off. So I ran a switch for the wire and now it's back to turning over but no spark. I tested the battery wire into the distributor and it is getting power. Did the new coil go bad?
