Fuel Sending Unit Headache

Just pulled my sending unit (stock tank) after loosing fuel pressure. The filter sock didn't come with it! It separated at the end of the tube and took the metal washer looking thing with it. I can see it so no worries on fishing it out. I am guessing the the Ethanol in my local gas is the culprit???

So heres my question: Since I have an external gas filter (after the pump), can I just put the sender back in without that filter sleeve? I think Im going to be repeating this drill each winter if I just replace the unit. #F_Ethanol
