new clutch not engaging?

OK- a ridiculous question for anyone who knows what they are doing... I had a friend show me how to build an engine (350 from a 69 block). It runs great. I attached the clutch, clutch fork, throwout bearing and bellhousing then lined it up, put it in the 1970 c10 (factor 4x4). It has a 3 on the tree. I cannot shift gears if the 4 x 4 is in neutral. If I put it in low or high (without locking the front wheels) I can then shift 1,2, 3, reverse all just fine. However, at no point in time do I get power from the engine to the transmission (I release the clutch while in gear and it acts like it is in neutral). Any ideas on how I have screwed this up...? Thanks a lot,
