Split Y pipe

Could the pipe split as a result of a backfire? The 79 350 I got had oil diluted with gasoline and some inexperienced kids had previously tried to get it started. The donor truck was later scrapped due to severe rust.

It has a TH400 attached. I am wondering what is the minimum I have to do to ensure it is OK. Put some oil in and do a compression check? Remove trans and put in new T/C seal? Pull engine pan for a look and put in front and rear seals and new timing set?

I will be putting in a quadrajet carb kit and having a look at the distributor that seems a little stiff to turn.

Opinions welcome.
