Anyone here swapped or reversed the centers on steel wheels themselves?

I know “green Gus” did it but I assume he’s no longer an active member since he sold his truck a while ago. I grinned down the welds but it just won’t seem to let go? Do I need to grind/cut through to the inside of the wheel? I hate doing that because it seems like I could cause an issue with the integrity of the wheel.
