Passenger Side Mirror View Question

I am about to install aftermarket 3"x5" sideview mirrors. My question is this, when you view your passenger side door mirror from the drivers seat, are you viewing the surface of the mirror through the wing window, or though the large door window? I have placed the mirror in both locations using tape to hold it in place and when I place the mirror so I can see it through the large door window it just seems too far back from the front of the door. If I place it so I can see it through the wing windows it seems too far forward. I am simply looking for opinions on where is should be, although I am far from an "original purest" Thanks.
