Mechanical Gauges

Good evening all.

I figured somebody has wired up a Autometer mechanical gauge combo up already. I'm trying to because I don't trust my gauge cluster on my 97 3500 7.4. I'm wondering if there's a problem with disconnecting at the sensor's and blocking off the wiring ends? I have heard (don't know if its true) that if the computer doesn't sense any oil pressure it will not allow the truck to start? I also heard that its the same with the water temp? Like I said I don't know.
I started pulling the plug on the R/S between #4 and #6 and of course the square plug snapped. I'm a wishing I would of went electrical instead.
Agrrrrr
