Tach pull up on E38?

Can't get a signal off the tach line with e38 PCM and LS3.
Classic Instruments says you don't need to add a pull up circuit with their gauges. Set to 4cyl and it'll work. Well that's not happening.
Switch it to crank in the tune? Then add pull up? Pull up only?
I read some much over this, my eyes are gonna bleed. Doesn't seem to be a concrete answer.
Anybody feel free to chime on your tach experiences
