Fuel sending unit

So I went to install my new sending unit and there wasn't a gasket. I can't remember if the original had a gasket or not. Does anybody's day know if they're supposed to come with one or do I have to purchase or make my own? Doesn't seem right that it would just be metal n metal between the tank and unit? ????
