wheel options

I have a '88 GMC V3500. Purchased with Cepek Hummer H1 wheels (16.5x8.25, 7" offset).

The big offset works because the truck still has dually axles (Dana 70 rear and Dana 60 front).

I don't have a spare and want to move away 16.5" wheels anyway.

Questions:

What are my options - should I look at H1 wheels with similar offset in 17" (these seem expensive)?

A friend suggested custom wheels made by someone like Detroit Steel Wheels - anyone done this?

Is there a simple option for modifying the axles/hubs to make more conventional offset wheels a better option?
