Not getting any fuel, help me out please.

Well, about a month ago i had some truck problems but we think it is the carb needing rebuilt. Well it had been sitting there for a while and i did some basic checks over belt and hoses but didnt disconect anything or replace anything. I figured that id go ahead and try to start her up, hoping for a miracle i guess. And after turning it over several times i noticed that there was no gas in my inline filter. So i had a mission to get gas into the lines or i might have another problem. After alot of trying i never got a drop into the filter. So i figure maybe i dont have enough gas in the tank, so i add 2 gallons, still no good. So i figure it was the fuel pump. I pulled it off and bought another from autozone. Put that sucker on and tried it again, still no luck. And now in the process i think i wore out my starter. Why might i not be getting fuel in the lines. When i bought the truck he said that the tank selector was bad and it actually fell apart on my way home. Could that matter? i drove it through 2 tanks with no problems.
