On mine from backing plate to backing plate, it's about 51 3/4". The axle in mine is the Eaton HO52, but mine's a 2wd. I don't know if it's different for a 4wd or not. I just know that 4wd's had leafs in the rear, mine has coils.

I do believe that '70 was the change over year and had two widths of rear axles installed. one matched the 69- and one matched the71+.
The earlier years were about 3/4" +- less. |

Something I found: (not year specific)
GM Dana 60 front (single wheel) ...................69" GM Dana 60 front (dual rear wheel) ..............77" ; +4" on each side vs single wheel GM 14 Bolt rear FF (single wheel) ....................67" GM 14 Bolt rear FF (dual wheel)........................63" GM 14 Bolt rear SemiF (single wheel) ..............66" GM Dana 44 Front (single wheel) ..............69"8-lug; 67" 6-lug GM 10 bolt front (single wheel) ..............69" 8"lug; 67" 6-lug GM 14 Bolt rear (Van single wheel) ...............70" GM 10 & 12 bolt rear ..................... 65" The rear axle that changed were the 2wd's when they went from 6 lug to 5 lug did not apply w/ 3/4 tons and 4wds.
