"FARMERisms" of the day

Don't get me wrong I was a farmer once too, but ya' gotta love the innovative engineering that happens on a farm

Today's Farmerisms:
-My '67 is a rust bucket from the lower body line - down. Everything is rusted through or missing for the most part, except the rocker panel on the passenger side. It's there and even has matching paint on it. I can see no signs of any real fabrication work, so I scrape the paint off of it and what do I see? A yellow and black Catepillar symbol staring back at me. My rocker panel is actually a fiberglass Catepillar sign or box of some sort that has been heated, bent and twisted to look like a rocker panel.

-After deciding to basically surgically remove my cab corners with a sawzall, I thought I might try and clean them out a little to keep from cutting through anything solid. These cab corners have 9 inch rust holes that were filled with that yellow spray foam insulation for houses that hardens pretty tough. So I pry the spongy mess out from the rusted metal and find two Coors light beer cans added into the mix, I guess it was to help stiffen their creation, kinda like putting rebar in cement. :-)

I'm sure I'll find plenty more, but I'd like to hear what others have found when patching up an old farm workhorse.

Longhorn,

Guess that explains the "old man" in your signature. Thanks for reminding me that I should get the truck "sniffed" before I take it on base. This farmer might've been raisin' a little more than wheat...

When I pulled the cab off my truck the other day, I found out why the detent never worked in the shifter....when the bearing cap fell out of the bottom of the colum, taking the spring with it, instead of fixing the problem, they simply wraped a piece of #9 wire around it to keep the tab from catching in the notch....pure genius.

Got my 68 fresh from the farm. And when I say fresh I think you know what I mean. But the darn thing runs good so I am afraid to "fix" it until I absilutely have to. The wiring is interesting...

I cleaned it up enough to be able to walk within 10 feet of it (OK I put in a used bench seat too) and am not sure I want to knock all the dirt and whatever off since I think that is what is holding what is left of the sheet metal together.

I restored a 70 Bronco for a girl, and when I took the quarter panel off, found that it was made of liscense plates and bondo. The rockers were made of soda cans and bondo.

For years of driving my truck I (and everyone that would ride with me) would hear this rocking sound every time the truck came to a stop, the truck was perfectly still no movement what so ever, but this rocking sound would continue for several seconds. What made things worse I could never find it, about drove me crazy.

Well it turned to be a piece of 1.5 metal conduit coupling inside the cowl area behind the vent where the water drains. That darn thing had been rolling around in that cowl cavity for 12 years that I know of and probably longer.

And would you know it, sometimes it would get just right and not move at all.
